Ground testing and airworthiness inspection

Engine run-in general info:  per Bingelis, Mattituck KEY IS HIGH RPM, LOW TEMPS. LOW POWER AND LOW HEAT IS OK, BUT DOES NOT CONTRIBUTE TO BREAK-IN.

Pre-engine first test

Vans chapter 15, firewall forward instructions for bleeding oil pressure line

fill with 8 quarts aviation mineral oil SAE40 or 50

fill fuel tanks 10 gallons each side, fuel dip tube calibration, pressurize system and check for leaks

initial "cold" differential compression test

configure EIS for engine readouts: oil temp 110-180 degrees. CHT, 220-350 degrees.

write up checklist, instructions for Martin

equipment: two headsets, Sporty’s radio, fire extinguishers for each side, rope to attach tailwheel to truck, chocks

check every fitting firewall forward

Engine first test: cowling off, less than 10 minutes; oil temp 110-180 degrees. CHT, 220-350 degrees.

start on left tank, mag

test carb heat, mag drop, LSE drop

cycle prop to max 300 rpm drop

check idle RPM

full power, no more than 30 seconds

cool down at 1,000rpm for 5 minutes

check fuel selector left and right

at idle turn off mag briefly to check p-lead

Engine second test: cowling on, less than 10 minutes; oil temp 110-180 degrees. CHT, 220-350 degrees

check shutdown idle rise

Pre-slow taxi test prep

Cleveland brake conditioning ("misc instructions" section of purple file).

Equipment: kneeboard, canopy hammer, checklists

Slow taxi test: less than 10 minutes; oil temp 110-180 degrees. CHT, 220-350 degrees

cycle prop to max 300 rpm drop

determine 3-point landing attitude

cool down at 1,000rpm for 5 minutes

Pre-fast taxi test prep

Fast taxi test

cycle prop to max 300 rpm drop

half-flaps, get going to ~35KIAS

check airspeed indicator and EFIS both showing speed

cool down at 1,000rpm for 5 minutes
